Mkrtich Mkrtchyan was born on June 5, 1952 in Yerevan.

Mr. Mkrtchyan graduated with a degree in medicine from the Yerevan State Medical Institute in 1977. He is a PhD in Medical Sciences. He is also a permanent mem­ber of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He was awarded a Mayrakan Yerakhtagitoutyun (Mother's Gratitude) Medal in 1998, a Medal for War Services in 2001 and a Garegin Nzhdeh Medal in 2002.

From 1974-1976 he worked as a medical attendant in the Medical and Sanitary Department # 3. From 1976-1977 he worked as a doctor-intern at Yerevan Republican Clinical Hospital. For the next six years he worked as an oncologist- therapist in Khapan Interregional Oncological Dispensary. From 1983-1989 he was a Khapan-Meghri Interregional forensic medicine expert of the Armenia SSR Ministry of Health Care. From 1989-1993 he was the head of Khapan Medical College. From 1992-2003 he was the head of Yerevan Baseline College # 1. He is also the chairman of the Council of Medium Level Professional Medical Educational Establishments under the RA Ministry of Health Care.

On May 25, 2003 he was elected to the NA from electoral district # 53 and he is currently on the NA Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture and Youth Affairs. He is a member of the Republican Party of Armenia Faction and party board as well as the Yerkrapah Volunteer Union.

Mr. Mkrthchyan is married and has two children.
