Born on August 16, 1956 in Yerevan.

1978 - Graduated from the Moscow Pedagogical Institute. Historian. Archaeologist. Candidate for Sciences PhD.

1978 - 1980 - Served in the Soviet army.

1980 - 1989 - Research assistant, Head of the scientific research division in the “Erebuni” Museum.

1989  - Research assistant in the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography under the Academy of Sciences.

1990 - 1992 - Took part in the Artsakh liberation movement.

1990 - 1992 - Member of the Armenia Central Committee of the Armenia Revolutionary Federation.

1992 - ­1995 - Member of ARF bureau.

1995 - 1998 - Arrested for political causes (the allegation was not confirmed later.)

1998 - 1999 - Advisor to the President of the Republic of Armenia and Head of the Commission on Issues of Local Self-Government.

1999 - 2003 - Deputy of the National Assembly (electoral district # 17,) Chair of the Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs of the National Assembly, member of the ARF faction.

2003 - 3007 - Deputy of the National Assembly (proportional electoral system, ARF.) Member of ARF faction. Member of ARF bureau.

June 12, 2003 - Elected Vice President of the National Assembly.

2007 - 2012 - Deputy of the National Assembly (proportional electoral system, ARF.)

June 7, 2007 - February 28, 2008 - Vice President of the National Assembly.

February 24, 2010 - May 31, 2012 - Member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly. May 19, 2008 - May 31, 2012 - Head of the “Armenian Revolutionary Federation” faction.

May 6, 2012 - Elected Deputy of the National Assembly by the proportional electoral system from the ARF.

Married, with two children.
