Political Meetings in Washington

On September 7 RA NA President Artur Baghdasaryan met Howard Dean, the Chairman of the US Democratic Party. The issues discussed during the meeting concerned the Armenian-American relations, the processes taking place in Armenia and in the region. Artur Baghdasaryan, RA NA President, discussed with Judy Van Rest, the Executive Vice President of the US International Republican Institute and Stephen Nix, Director, Eurasia Programs issues concerning the internal political developments of Armenia, the constitutional and electoral reforms, and the Armenian activity of the US International Republican Institute. The private talks with senator Paul Sarbanes and congressmen Xavier Beccera, Bob Menendez, Ed Royce, George Radanovich, Stany Hower were about the problems of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the regional security and cooperation, the democratic reform in Armenia. Artur Baghdasaryan considered unacceptable the intention of Turkey to build a railway by leaving out Armenia instead of putting in action the railway Kars-Gyumri and called on protecting the rightful Armenian position during the debates at the US Congress.


The next meeting was with the leaders and the responsible officials of a number of authoritative expertise centers at the center “Woodrow Wilson.” Issues concerning the democratic reforms in Armenia, internal political developments, the corruption fighting were discussed with L. Hamilton, the President and Director of the “Woodrow Wilson” center. By the way, the US President directly appoints the management of this center. The same day Artur Baghdasaryan met a dozen of experts, journalists, diplomats, representatives of NGOs and state bodies at the “Woodrow Wilson” center. The RA NA President the answered the questions and gave interviews to the Armenian and Russian media.
