The issue of the election of the Chair was on the agenda of the extraordinary sitting of the RA NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security held on December 14. The NA Armenia Faction once again did not nominate a candidate for the Deputy Chair of the Committee in an official letter. The opposition deputies did not participate in the sitting.

The Chair of the Standing Committee Andranik Kocharyan has informed that according to the RA Constitutional Law – the NA Rules of Procedure, if the faction does not nominate a candidate for the vacant position reserved to the faction within the defined period of time, then the right to nominate a candidate for the given position passes to the faction with the highest coefficient.

In this case, the right will be reserved to the parliamentary majority by law, though the NA Civil Contract Faction has not nominated a candidate for the Deputy Chair of the Committee.

“It speaks about the fact that our faction does not want to take the vacant position reserved to the opposition immediately, and we expect that the Armenia Faction will decide with the With Honor Faction and will present possible versions, otherwise the Rules of Procedure law gives legal solutions, that is, the ruling faction will decide who can be the candidate for the Deputy Chair of the Committee,” the Committee Chair said.

According to Andranik Kocharyan, the Armenia and With Honor Faction have an opportunity to nominate a new candidate within 5 days.

The Committee Chair has expressed hope that it will be possible to reach mutual agreement to resolve the issue, otherwise there will be another solution, which is required by law.
