Cooperation with Freedom House is Important for Armenia: Sargis Khandanyan

The cooperation with Freedom House is very important for Armenia. In recent years the growing role of the organization is noticeable in Armenia and in the region: the deputy of the RA NA Civil Contract Faction Sargis Khandanyan said during the meeting with Marc Behrendt, the Director for Europe and Eurasia Programs at Freedom House International Human Rights Organization.

On May 19, the meeting was held, where the Deputy Chair of the Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Diaspora, Youth and Sport Taguhi Ghazaryan also took part.

According to Sargis Khandanyan, the programs being implemented by the Freedom House are rather effective. He noted that Armenia follows all the reports of the organization, underlining that they, as well as the reports of other international human rights organizations serve as a landmark for Armenia.

Taguhi Ghazaryan thanked the human rights organization for the effective discussions regarding the freedom of speech organized in recent period. According to her, a complete concept of the strategy of the legislative reforms on media is in the programs of the executive and legislative bodies. The deputy presented in detail the law on Audio-Visual Media adopted in 2020, as well as the amendments being designed in the law on Mass Media. She also touched upon the problems existing in the sphere.

Marc Behrendt noted that he had been to Armenia many times and knows well Armenia. With regards to the geopolitical last events, he stated that rather hard times are in the whole world. According to Marc Behrendt, the Freedom House will continue working, creating new opportunities for cooperation, as well as will support for the implementation of new ideas. Both Armenia and the region are important for the organization.
