Ambassadors of OSCE Member States Highlight the Holding of Coming Elections in Accordance with Democratic Standards

On April 19 RA NA President Artur Baghdasaryan met the ambassadors of OSCE member states accredited in Armenia and representatives of international structures.

Noting that for the first time the full agreement of all political forces was reached on the draft of the Electoral Code, the NA President detailed the main changes, informing that the draft has been already sent to the Venice Commission and OSCE expertise. Artur Baghdasaryan, answering the ambassadors’ questions, noted that in June the visit of the joint expertise group of the OSCE and Venice Commission to Armenia is expected, during which discussions will be organized on new Electoral Code and problems of administration. During the meeting the sides also touched upon issues of consultative, technical and expertise assistance.

John Evans U.S. Ambassador, Vladimir Pryakhin, Head of the OSCE Yerevan Office, Marco Clemente, Ambassador of the Republic of Italy, Consuelo Vidal, UN Resident Coordinator, indicationg in their speeches the inclusion of the recommendations of the international structures in the Electoral Code draft, highlighted the ensuring of the legislative bases and displaying political will for holding the 2007-2008 general elections according to international standards and expressed readiness to assist in these processes.

At the end of the meeting an agreement was reached to resume the discussions on the Electoral Code draft.
