Address by the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Hovik Abrahamyan on the Occasion of the International Day of Democracy

“Dear compatriots,

Since 2008 the international community has proclaimed September 15 as the International Day of Democracy.

Democracy is one of the most important provisions forming the constitutional order of the Republic of Armenia. Today, all prerequisites exist in our country for strengthening and developing the democracy. Nevertheless, we shall realize quite well that the democracy cannot be established in one day. It’s necessary to make serious efforts in strengthening the civil society for the establishment of democracy. For that reason the legislators of Armenia should make all efforts for promoting the strengthening of all actors of the civil society, especially the political parties and NGOs.

Joining our colleagues of the parliaments of more than 150 member states of the Inter-Parliamentary Union of the world I heartily congratulate everybody on the occasion of this well-known day. I am sure that the proud spirit of democracy will continue to be materialized with the society’s victories, strengthening the independent statehood of Armenia.”
