RA NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan Receives Gunnar Wiegand

On December 15 the Speaker of RA National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan received the Director for Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus, Central Asia, DG External Relations, European Commission, the head of EU Negotiation Team Gunnar Wiegand.

Greeting the guest the NA Speaker highly assessed Armenia-European Union relations and in that context the development of the relations between the European Parliament and RA National Assembly. Hovik Abrahamyan emphasized the visit of the delegation led by him in June of this year to the European Parliament, considering effective the conducted negotiations, which promoted the formation of more objective and complete understanding on Armenia, NK conflict and Armenian-Turkish relations with the European deputies. The NA Speaker also considered important the 11th the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee meeting, which was held in Brussels a few days ago, considering objective the final statement adopted as a result of it.

RA NA Speaker noted that the Armenian authorities displayed necessary political will to see our country in the European family, and they were ready to fulfill the assumed obligations.

Expressing his gratitude for reception Gunnar Wiegand noted that such meetings gave opportunity to be more informed and have better picture about Armenia. According to the assessment of the Director for Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus, Central Asia, DG External Relations, European Commission, the head of EU Negotiation Team, within the framework of  the Eastern Partnership and concluding the Associated Treaty, Armenia-European Union relations have become more active and practical. In the words of the representative of the European Commission, active works are going on in economic integration, free trade, the facilitation of the citizens’ move, as well as harmonization of legal acts. And in this respect, according to the head of EU Negotiation Team, the legislative reforms are highlighted, which should be consonant with EU standards and norms.

Emphasizing the meeting and expressing willingness in supporting the works the NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan proposed that during the visits to Armenia the officers of the European Union would have meetings and conduct negotiations with the representatives of the National Assembly.

Gunnar Wiegand highly assessed the willingness of the Republic of Armenia and, in particular, the Speaker of the Parliament to fulfill the assumed obligations and form relevant legislative field.
