National Assembly President Samvel Nikoyan Receives PACE Monitoring Committee Co-Rapporteur for Armenia John Prescott

On January 17 the RA National Assembly President Samvel Nikoyan received John Prescott, Co-Rapporteur of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for Armenia.

Welcoming the guest the NA President highly appreciated the role of the Council of Europe in the process of the reforms being implemented in Armenia and the cooperation with that European structure.

John Prescott has noted that considerable positive changes and progress have been recorded in the direction of inner-political stability. In that process the PACE Monitoring Committee Co-Rapporteur also considered important the role of the National Assembly.

Both sides touched upon the March 2008 events and the criminal case sued in that connection.

During the meeting issues relating to the upcoming parliamentary elections were discussed. In John Prescott’s words, the issue in what electoral order will be held the elections are not involved within his authorities. To his assessment, the amendments made in the electoral legislation are impressive, and the reforms of judicial-legal system are promising.

The NA President Samvel Nikoyan has noted that the result of any positive change will be the elections, and as President of the National Assembly, he will do the utmost of his authorities for the free, just and transparent elections.

Both sides highlighted the necessity of holding the elections in compliance with international standards.
