Meeting in the NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations

On July 9 Artak Zakaryan, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly and Committee members Shirak Torosyan, Samvel Farmanyan, Alexander Arzumanyan, Nikol Pashinyan and Vahan Babayan met with Jaap Werner, Director of the Europe Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Dziunik Aghajanian, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Armenia to the Kingdom of the Netherlands also attended the meeting.

Artak Zakaryan touched upon Armenia’s foreign policy and regional problems. The Committee Chairman appreciated the relations with the regional countries constructive and mutually beneficial. In his word, in case of balanced policy in the region it will be possible to keep sustainable, adequate and peaceful developments.

Talking about the non-settled problems with Azerbaijan Mr Zakaryan touched upon the latter’s war rhetoric, borderline incidents, as a result of which not only the border-guards of the RA and Nagorno Karabakh, but also the peaceful people suffer. It was noted that during the last 20 years in the process of the NK conflict peaceful settlement Armenia’s position had been consonant with the international principles and approaches.

Artak Zakaryan thanked the Parliament of the Netherlands for recognizing the Armenian Genocide in 2004.

In the meeting the sides also touched upon the Armenian-Turkish relations and the parliamentary elections held in Armenia.

Jaap Werner highlighted that the NA elections in Armenia were held in accordance with democratic standards. He underlined the circumstance that the observation missions positively assessed the elections of the National Assembly of the fifth convocation of the Republic of Armenia, expressing hope that Armenia in future would remain adherent to democratic reforms.

In the course of the meeting the Committee members presented their views over the discussed issues.
