Parliamentary Hearings in the National Assembly

On December 8 at the National Assembly of the RA by the initiative of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations the parliamentary hearings on the theme “The World without Genocides” were held.

The hearings were aimed at the condemnation and prevention of Genocide, as the gravest crime against humanity, at the imperative of struggle against genocides’ denial and at the legal issues related to the elimination of the consequences as well.

The hearings were attended by the Parliament members, representatives of Government and by the Vice President, President of the Senate of the Republic of Uruguay Danilo Astori as an honorary guest.

The delegations of two international diaspora organizations , The World Armenian C ongress and Europ e an Jewish Parliament, attended the hearings headed by their leaders . Speeches were made by t he representatives of the “Armenian Cause” office and the Armenian traditional parties, prominent experts of academic and scientific communities, law y ers, representatives of national minorites and civil society structures as well.

In the reports, in the light of Armenian Genocide and Holocaust, were discussed t he issues of historical and political interpdependence and consistency concerning t he crimes which occu r red in different historical periods . In the speeches, particular l y , were discusse d the issues on the realization of applicable law concerning Turkey’s international legal liability for the Armenian Genocide.

Reference was made to the fight against genocide denial. The current legislative mechanisms for the liability of genocide denial were introduced and the main challenges were discussed in the context of denial. The current international experience concerning the elimination of the consequences of genocides was analyzed and the mechanisms of realization of possible solutions as well.
