Meeting at the Standing Committee on European Integration
1 / 1

On October 16 the Chair of the NA Standing Committee on European Integration Naira Zohrabyan met with Gonzalo Urriolabeitia, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Argentina to Armenia and the Consul Adriana Trotta.

Highlighting the development of the Armenian-Argentinean relations, Naira Zohrabyan highly assessed the high level of the political relations existing between the two countries, expressing hope that due to the efforts made by the two countries the economic relations also could record high indices.

Mrs Zohrabyan thanked the Ambassador for the abstained position of Argentina in the resolutions “On Putting the Issue of Azerbaijan’s Occupied Territories on the Agenda,” “Frozen Conflicts in GUAM Countries” and “The Situation in the Occupied Territories of Azerbaijan” on the UN General Assembly. The Committee Chair expressed her gratitude to Mr Urriolabeitia that Argentina co-authored the Resolution “Prevention of Genocide” proposed and authored in the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva by the Republic of Armenia in 2013 and in 2015. She has highlighted the fact that April 24 is marked in Argentina as a Day of Tolerance and Respect between Nations. In this context, Mrs Zohrabyan evaluated the erection of about two dozens of memorials dedicated to the Armenian Genocide.

The sides discussed the possibility of using the inter-parliamentary ties more effectively. Naira Zohrabyan noted that the parliamentary diplomacy is a flexible instrument, and we should use it more effectively. In her word, where the official diplomacy can be restrained, the parliamentary diplomacy can work more flexible. Mrs Zohrabyan expressed conviction that the relations between the parliaments should not be mere mutual visits of ceremonial nature, but should be inclined to the implementation of mutual programmes. The Ambassador also emphasized the activation of inter-parliamentary ties, noting that in future they will discuss with the NA Standing Committee on European Integration concrete programmes aimed at further developing and deepening the inter-parliamentary ties.

The Committee Chair presented to Ambassador the process of the constitutional reforms going on in Armenia, the issues relating to the RA inner-political and social-economic situation.
