On May 10-12 the Chairman of the RA NA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs Koryun Nahapetyan had meetings in the Italian Parliament with the Chairman of the Committee on Defense of the Senate Nicola Latorre, the Chairman of the Committee on Defense of the Chamber of Deputies Francesco Garofani and the Chair of Italy-Armenia Friendship Group, Senator Emilia Grazia De Biasi. The RA Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Italy Sargis Ghazaryan took part in the meetings.

During the meetings with the Chairmen of the Committees on Defense Nicola Latorre and Francesco Garofani international and regional security, fighting against terrorism, the NATO upcoming Warsaw Summit, inter-state issues, including the parliamentary cooperation were discussed.

Koryun Nahapetyan presented the events over the Nagorno Karabakh and the recent developments, underlined the necessity of giving targeted assessment to Azerbaijan’s military aggression, security guarantees to Nagorno Karabakh people, as well as creating international investigation mechanisms of ceasefire violation cases. The peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict in the format of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs was highlighted.

Both sides highly assessed the cooperation in the peace-keeping sphere, especially the peacekeepers’ participation under the Italian Command in the UN Peacekeeping Mission UNIFIL.

The perspectives over the parliamentary oversight issues in the spheres of defense and security were also discussed.

During the meeting with the Chair of Italy-Armenia Friendship Group, Senator Emilia Grazia De Biasi the role of the Friendship Groups was emphasized in terms of the political dialogue development between Armenia and Italy, the fulfillment of the cultural and economic new initiatives. Koryun Nahapetyan highly assessed the activities directed to the Armenian Genocide commemoration of the Parliamentary Friendship Group of Italy. He presented the actions and the events of Armenia-Italy Friendship Group of the RA National Assembly. Emilia Grazia De Biasi has underlined that the MPs of Italy attach great importance to the further deepening of cooperation with Armenia.

A mutual agreement was reached on the perspectives of the implementation of the joint programmes between the Friendship Groups.
