On January 23, the President of the Republic submitted resignation. Immediately after his resignation, discussions were held in the press about possible candidates for the RA President. On January 25, during the parliamentary briefings following the NA regular sittings, the journalists were interested in the opinion of the ruling parliamentary force on Edmon Marukyan and Aram Sargsyan’s candidacy.
The Chair of the NA Standing Committee on Financial-Credit and Budgetary Affairs Gevorg Papoyan has noted that at the moment, Armenia has the de facto President. “In such a situation, we consider it premature to discuss the issue of a new candidate: the law gives an opportunity to take back a resignation. Now, the President’s position is not vacant, so the issue of a new candidate will be discussed when it is vacant,” the deputy underlined.
Regarding the issue of the RA President on being a citizen of another country, Vahagn Hovakimyan has mentioned that it is a matter for investigation by law enforcement bodies.
