Anna Vardapetyan Nominated for Position of RA Prosecutor General
1 / 6

The RA NA Civil Contract Faction, guided by the RA Constitution, the Constitutional Law “Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly”, nominated Anna Vardapetyan as a candidate for the position of Prosecutor General. The Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs Vladimir Vardanyan informed about this.

On June 28, the issue of the nomination of a candidate for the position of RA Prosecutor General to be presented to the National Assembly was debated at the extraordinary sitting of the Committee by a special procedure. Presenting brief information on biographical, professional and work activities of a candidate, Vladimir Vardanyan noted that Anna Vardapetyan joined the staff of young lecturers of YSU Faculty of Law, becoming one of the leaders. According to the Committee Chair, the candidate has always stood out with a very high sense of responsibility, has shown extreme principled, value positions related to the rule of law, the establishment of law and order in the country and the rise of justice.

“Anna Vardapetyan as Prosecutor General will have the opportunity to implement important reforms aimed at the establishment, development and further improvement of the prosecutorial system,” Vladimir Vardanyan noted.

Anna Vardapetyan thanked the Civil Contract Faction for nominating her in the position of RA Prosecutor General. She presented those fundamental changes that she expects to see during her service in the system during and as a result of her service. “Democracy does not exist without the rule of law. An established prosecutorial system is a guarantee of the rule of law and, consequently, of democracy,” Anna Vardapetyan said.

Referring to the changes made in the judicial system in Armenia, the candidate noted that the Prosecutor General’s Office plays an important role in this process. One of her purposes is to use her knowledge to set a higher benchmark of the rule of law, contributing to the establishment of democracy in Armenia.

Answering the deputies’ questions, Anna Vardapetyan informed that she takes part in the work of the Constitutional Reform Council, conducts studies and will present her vision on the reforms of the Prosecutor General’s Office in the near future.

“The Prosecutor General should be considered not as an accuser, but as a restorer of justice. This should be the message you should be guided,” Vladimir Vardanyan noted in his speech.

According to Hovhannes Kocharyan, a member of the Chamber of Advocates, Candidate of Juridical Sciences, the appointment of a new candidate for the position of Prosecutor General is a serious legal and political event in any state governed by the rule of law and predetermines the patterns and guidelines for the development of legal life. “The National Assembly will elect the Prosecutor General in a difficult political situation, in the conditions of challenges posed to the internal security of our state. Accordingly, the expectations from the professional activity of the Prosecutor General are too high, and the efforts to strengthen trust in criminal justice are unnaturally heavy. The role and significance of the Prosecutor General’s Office is exclusive in the law enforcement system,” Hovhannes Kocharyan noted.

In her final speech, Anna Vardapetyan thanked the MPs for the positive assessments. She assured that she will work hard. The Committee unanimously decided to nominate Anna Vardapetyan for the position of RA Prosecutor General.
