Parliament debates legislative initiative aimed at developing the cooperation between the competent bodies of Eurojust and Armenia
The Agreement, that was signed on April 5, 2024, is aimed at strengthening, as well as developing the international cooperation between the competent authorities of the Eurojust and the Republic of Armenia in the fight against the organized crime, terrorism, money laundering, trafficking and other serious crimes. The draft law on Ratifying the Agreement On cooperation between the competent authorities in the field of legal cooperation between the Republic of Armenia and the European Union in the field of criminal proceedings of the Republic of Armenia and the European Union Agency for Cooperation in the Field of Criminal Justice (Eurojust), was debated at September 9 regular sitting of the eighth session of the RA NA eighth convocation.
As the RA Deputy Minister of Justice Karen Karapetyan presented, it is designed by the Agreement that the Republic of Armenia appoints a Prosecutor on Cooperation for implementing the communication and cooperation between the competent authorities of the Eurojust and the Republic of Armenia. In its turn, the Eurojust can appoint the contact representative from its side – a Magistrate on Cooperation. “The implementation of these procedures will promote the ensuring of necessary communication speed with the EU member and third states, special attention will be established to the protection of personal data,” Karen Karapetyan.
The Chair of the Standing Committee on European Integration Arman Yeghoyan presented the endorsement of the Committee on the draft. He informed that Agreement on Cooperation with Eurojust, besides the EU member countries, also signed 13 EU non-member states, Armenia will be the 14th
. “This is one more evidence that the Government and the ruling majority are steadily moving forward on the path of European integration,” the Committee Chair said, adding that after the ratification of the Agreement Armenia will appoint a Coordinator Prosecutor on Cooperation, who will become Collegial Member of the Prosecutor's Office of the Eurojust will have, accordingly, all the rights defined for non-EU countries, in the pre-trial and judicial stage, it will request information and receive it in the prescribed manner from the partners of the EU member states. At the same time, Armenia assumes obligation if necessary, to transfer similar information to its partners. Arman Yeghoyan highlighted this step within the framework of Armenia-EU relations, noting the they will continue making closer relations with the EU all other institutes and agencies.
