On October 2, the NA Vice President Hakob Arshakyan met with the President of the Senate of Mexico Gerardo Fernández Noroña during his visit to Mexico. The Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, the Senator of the Senate of Mexico, the President of the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Cynthia López Castro also participated in the meeting.
Hakob Arshakyan approved Armenia’s interest of deepening cooperation with Mexico in all spheres, and the fact of his participation in the inauguration of taking the Office of the newly elected President of the country is conditioned by that.
Both sides underscored the importance of the further development of the inter-parliamentary cooperation on the agenda of both sides.
The President of the Senate Gerardo Fernández Noroña expressed his readiness for making efforts in the rapprochement with the RA National Assembly, as well as especially touched upon the Statement adopted by the Senate of Mexico in 2023 on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, noting that Mexico stands next to the brotherly Armenia in the recognition of the crimes aimed at the humanity and preventing the possible new crimes. Hakob Arshakyan expressed the assessment of the Armenian side related to the adoption of the Statement, mentioning that with that step, Mexico, among other civilized countries, reaffirmed its attitude towards the protection of universal values and fundamental human rights.
Issues on regional security and peace were also discussed. The NA Vice President presented to his colleagues the negotiations and developments going on around the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Hakob Arshakyan expressed his gratitude for the balanced and fair position and speeches of the representative of Mexico earlier during the UN Security Council meetings.
Gerardo Fernández Noroña expressed his support for the peace process and expressed hope that the process of signing the peace treaty will be effective, and all disagreements will be resolved as soon as possible, ensuring long-term and stable peace in the region.
At the end of the meeting Hakob Arshakyan left a note in the Book of Honorary Guests of the Senate.
The NA Vice President had a meeting also with representatives of the Armenian community of Mexico in the format of work dinner.
At the meeting, in a relaxed and warm atmosphere, an exchange of ideas on the future development perspectives of the Armenian-Mexico multidisciplinary cooperation was held. Hakob Arshakyan answered the attendees’ questions, presented the normalization of Armenia-Turkey relations, the process regarding the signing of the peace treaty with Azerbaijan.
During his stay in Mexico City, the NA Vice President visited the Embassy of Armenia, as well as gave an interview to the Mexican El Universal prestigious newspaper.
