Press Conference of the RA NA Delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union

At the press conference held on October 20 the RA NA Vice President Eduard Sharmazanov, the deputies Karine Atshemyan and Heghine Bisharyan detailed their participation in the works of the 131st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Geneva on October 12-17. The members of the Delegation informed the attendees that delegates from 142 countries had participated in the works of the 131st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The Head of the Delegation Eduard Sharmazanov has stated that they have effectively worked; the delegation has taken part in the plenary sittings of the Assembly, as well as at the sittings of the Committees. The members of the delegation met with the President of the Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany Norbert Lammert, the First Vice President of the Council of States of the Swiss Confederation Claude Hêche, the former President of the National Assembly of Cyprus Marious Garoian, the Greek, the Estonian and the Czech counterparts. A number of issues of bilateral interest have been discussed. Mr Sharmazanov informed the journalists that in the meetings with the representatives of the European Union countries the colleagues have highlighted the necessity of cooperating with our country and developing the relations.

During the meetings the sides touched upon the Armenian-Turkish relations, the problem of the NK conflict settlement and the programmes of marking the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide.

With respect to the Armenian-Turkish relations, the delegates have stressed that the Republic of Armenia will never regulate its relations with any precondition; moreover, the Karabakh problem cannot be a precondition.

The members of the Armenian Delegation have presented the position of Armenia on Nagorno Karabakh problem, with respect to this, the President of the Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany Norbert Lammert has considered inadmissible the military settlement of the problem, seeing it exclusively through peaceful means and within the OSCE Minsk Group.

Karine Atshemyan, also effectively assessing the work of the delegation, has noted that she has been elected a member of the Bureau on the Countries’ Peace and National Security, has taken part in the works of the Bureau, and has presented the positions of our country on the Armenian-Turkish relations, the NK conflict settlement. In Karine Atshemyan’s word, the delegation has also taken part in the works of the Eurasian Group and the debate of the topical issues. Mrs Atshemyan has informed those present that they have also taken part in the elections, particularly, during the Assembly the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, who is the representative of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Saber Chowdhury.

The member of the delegation Heghine Bisharyan has noted that within the framework of the visit more than a dozen of meetings have been held, and issues of bilateral interest have been discussed. Mrs Bisharyan has been elected a member of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians, has taken part in the works of the Committee. Among other items, the item on the extension of the Ebola disease epidemics has also been discussed, which as a topical issue has been included in the agenda of the plenary meeting.

The members of the delegation have informed the attendees that during the meetings they have invited their colleagues to take part in the events dedicated to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide.
