Armen Ashotyan: Armenia-EU Relations Promote the Regional Stability

On October 9, the Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations received the Special for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia at the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) Andreas Peschke, Special Envoy on Immigrants and National Minorities at the FRG Internal Office, Member of the German Bundestag Hartmut Koschyk and the Bundestag Deputy Stephan Mayer. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to the RA Bernhard Matthias Kiesler attended the meeting.

Welcoming the guests in the RA National Assembly, Armen Ashotyan has highlighted the character of the relations with the German Bundestag and the dynamics of cooperation, noting that the relations still have a great potential of development, and the Armenian side is ready to make necessary efforts for the development and deepening of the relations with the newly elected Bundestag.

Within the framework of the inter-parliamentary cooperation Armen Ashotyan, as Head of Armenia-Germany Friendship Group, greatly emphasized the effective and constructive activities of the Friendship Groups in the parliaments of the two states and expressed hope that the members of the newly elected Bundestag Germany-South Caucasus Friendship Group would genuinely reflect the high level of the relations between Armenia and Germany and would be ready to take practical steps for boosting the inter-parliamentary relations between the two countries.

In the course of the meeting the parliamentarians of the two countries also touched upon the perspectives of cooperation in different spheres.

In the context of the RA-EU relations the Committee Chair Armen Ashotyan touched upon the signing of the RA-EU new Comprehensive Agreement in Brussels in November within the framework of the Eastern Partnership, the willingness of Armenia in boosting the relations with the European Union. The Committee Chair has noted that Armenia-EU relations promote the regional stability. With respect to this Armen Ashotyan also presented the Visa liberalisation process with Europe and stated that conditioned by the logical sequence of the steps Armenia would be ready to take measures in that direction, too.

Regarding the peaceful settlement process of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Armen Ashotyan greatly highlighted the importance of the OSCE Minsk Group, as well as the balanced position of Germany in this issue. The Committee Chair Armen Ashotyan has also referred to the revelations connected with the ‘Azerbaijani Laundromat’ and has noted that concerning this case it is necessary to implement a comprehensive and full study for keeping deprived of corruption scandals the authority of both the international and national parliaments.

During the meeting Armen Ashotyan attached importance to the fact of the Armenian Genocide recognition by Germany and noted that the recognition of the Genocide by the international community is a step in prevention of the new crimes against mankind.
