Lernik Alexanyan was born on October 16, 1952 in the village of Ararat in the Ararat region.
Mr. Alexanyan received his degree in engineering-mechanics from the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute in 1974 and in 1985 he graduated from Baku Highest School of Party under the Central Committee of the Soviet Union Communist Party.
From 1974-1975 he worked as a lecturer in the Ararat Industrial and Technical vocational school. The next five years he worked as a chief mechanic in the Ararat Gas Department. From 1980-1983 and then from 1985-1990 he held different positions in the Ararat Regional Council of the Communist Party of Armenia. From 1990-1993 he headed the Ararat Communications infrastructure. Thereafter he spent three yeras as deputy to the head of the Executive Committee of the Ararat Regional Council. In 1998 he was appointed head of the Transport and Civil Engineering Department of the RA Ararat Regional Administration. From 1998-1999 he was deputy governor.
In 1998 was elected as a deputy to the NA (electoral district # 111) where he was a member of the Yerkrapah Deputy Group.
From 1999-2003 he served his second term as a deputy in the NA (electoral district # 34) where he was a member of the NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs and the Unity Faction.
On May 25, 2003 he was reelected from the proportional list of the Republican Party of Armenia, where he currently sits on the NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs and is a member of both the Republican Party of Armenia Faction and party.
Mr. Alexanyan is married and has two children.
