RA Draft Criminal Code Discussed during Visiting Working Meeting

On September 19, the NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs together with the UN Development Programme/UNDP Modern Parliament for a Modern Armenia held a visiting working meeting in Tsaghkadzor. During three days the RA Draft Criminal Code authored by the Government will be debated. Representatives of a number of concerned structures took part in the meeting.

According to the Committee Chair Vladimir Vardanyan, the document has been amended for about ten years, and every time the process of the Code adoption has been postponed with different reasons. He has added that the moment of completing the abovementioned process has come, as it is a key issue for a modern Armenia. The Committee Chair has noted that while revising the document the experience of the European leading countries has been taken into consideration.

Vladimir Vardanyan has stated that the criminal legislation is developing, new punitive measures have emerged, the perception on some of them has changed, and there is a necessity to pass new criminal and criminal-procedure codes.

The Minister of Justice Rustam Badasyan distinguished key amendments, qualifying them revolutionary.

The schedule of the new code is approved until the end of the year, and completely the application phase will be during about one year.
