Increasing the Number of Judges to Result in Decrease of Criminal Cases Examination Terms

At February 3 extraordinary sitting of the National Assembly, the legislative package designing amendments and addenda to the constitutional law the RA Judicial Code and to the law on Justice Academy.


According to the RA Minister of Justice Rustam Badasyan, the goal is to facilitate the burden on courts, to ensure the efficiency of the examination of the cases related to pre-trial criminal procedure cases, as well as the corruption crimes, the more productive use of the resources and the reduction of the corruption risks. It is designed to increase the number of the judges in the First instance, in the General Jurisdiction and in the Appeal Criminal Courts. The implementation of the pre-trial criminal procedure cases and corruption crimes is envisaged to reserve to the judges and the new compiled human resources.


As a result of changes, the number of the judges in the judicial system will in general, be increased by 17, at least 8 of them in Yerevan.


The member of the RA NA Sanding Committee on State and Legal Affairs Suren Grigoryan presented the endorsement of the Committee.


During the exchange of ideas the MPs touched upon the inner-political situation, the necessity of the radical reforms in the judicial system, ineffectively assessed the sectional changes.


Speaking on behalf of the NA Bright Armenia Faction, Ani Samsonyan has noted that the authors of the initiative claim that the provision concerning the judges being involved with a number of cases removed from the draft law, including the anti-corruption cases, but the it exists in the revised version.


On behalf of the NA My Step Faction Alen Simonyan delivered a speech. “People who had been in power for 30 years accuse us for not doing things in two years. Yes, we didn’t do. We did not manage to turn some people’s Bentley cars, castles into Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Yes, we are guilty, we’ll correct it, we’ll manage, I am sure.


In his final speech Rustam Badasyan has noted that the draft law is not hurriedly accepted, and it has been put for public discussion from December.


The debates of the packages in the second reading will be held within 24 hours after passing in the first reading, and before that they wil l be discussed in the Head Committees.
