At March 15 sitting of the NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security the bill on Amending the RA Law on Military Service and the Serviceman’s Status authored by the Bright Armenia Faction was debated in the first reading. The initiative proposes to raise the age limit of turning to contract military service and being in service in the Armed Forces and other troops, raising it up to 63, the higher officers – up to 65.
The key rapporteur Edmon Marukyan has noted that the necessity of the adoption of the draft law is substantiated by the factor that the serviceman, who turned that age, releasing from work, often leaves for visiting work, but is still able to continue the service in the Armed forces or in other troops. The same also relates to the citizens, whose age does not allow to get engaged in the work of the Armed forces.
The Deputy Minister of Defense Arman Sargsyan has noted that though the bill has positive tendencies, but the regulation of the age limit is accepted in all states of the world and has such principles of the organization of the military service in the basis, as the correspondence of the person’s physical and health state to the military pots and the functions stemming from it. The Government proposes to be abstained in raising the age limit in that amount.
The MPs highlighted the proposal of the presented amendment, considering it urgent. It has been noted that only the item of age limit that has been proposed to regulate during the period from the first to the second reading, is subject for debate. Thus, the bill was endorsed by the Committee.
