At April 12 sitting of the NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security, the draft law on Amending the RA Law on Military Service and the Serviceman’s Status authored by the NA Bright Armenia Faction was debated in the second reading.

The NA opposition faction proposes to r a ise the age threshold of military service setting up to 63 -year-old for contracts and up to 65-year-old for the servicemen who have 'Colonel-General ’ and 'Army General' military ranks.

The Government has proposed to set up different age thresholds for officer and private ranks. Accordingly, it is proposed to make the stipulated 40-year-old to 45 and 45-year-old to 50 in the existing law. It is proposed to make the 48-year-old to 52 for junior staff officer and 50-year-old to 58 for senior staff officer. The age threshold was left unchanged for higher ranks. The Government proposed to proportionately raise the reserves’ age threshold making it from 48 to 53, from 50 to 55, from 55 to 58 and from 58 to 60-year-old.

According to the key rapporteur Gevorg Gorgisyan, they do not have objections related to the proposals presented by the executive body .

The Deputy noted that there are citizens who impatiently wait to the adoption of the law.

The co-rapporteur Armen Khachatryan has stated that the draft law is important and urgent and it solves a serious problem in terms of defense. He persuaded to endorse the bill.

The MP’s claim was accepted, and the draft law was endorsed by the Committee.
