Book Giving Day Celebrated in Parliament
1 / 23

On February 19, the Book Giving Day is celebrated in Armenia and in Artsakh since 2008. The choice of the day is not accidental: the All Armenian Poet Hovhannes Tumanian was born on February 19, 1869.

On the occasion of the beautiful and special holiday literary events, public readings and meetings with the famous writers and book discussions were held. The parliament also does not stay aloof from this holiday: every year here traditionally people give and receive books.

On this Book Giving Day, the pupils and the teachers of Yerevan Anton Chekhov N 55 School visited the legislative body. The NA deputies and the representatives of the Staff met them in the hospitable library of parliament and touched upon the important of reading. The event was held in warm and free atmosphere, the deputies and the pupils exchanged books and recited Hovhannes Tumanian’s quatrains.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament the NA Acting President Hakob Arshakyan underlined the importance of education, urging the teenagers to always study and not to stop dreaming. The deputy Artur Hovhannsiyan has added that today, the state does everything to create an environment where people can get enough education to make their dreams come true and to develop the state.

“Tell me what books you read, I will tell you who you are,” the deputy Artur Khachatryan said, modifying a well-known saying, and underlined the importance of reading right books. “As you choose friends, so you choose books,” he urged the teenagers.

“Everything, everything good in the world, people have tried to put in books. The knowledge that is summarized in books is the basis of what you will try to create in the future,” the deputy Vahagn Aleksanyan stated.

At the end of the meeting, the guests took a tour in the building of parliament and were in the NA session hall.

Let us note that this year the Book Giving Day is dedicated to the 125th birth anniversary of Yeghishe Charents.
