On February 24, the RA NA deputies of the Civil Contract Faction representing national minorities Rustam Bakoyan and Aleksey Sandikov met with the members of the Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities of the Council of Europe (CoE).
The President of the Advisory Committee Marie B. Hagsgård was interested in the preservation of the language, culture and traditions of the national minorities in Armenia.
According to the representative of the largest national minority in Armenia, the Yazidi community, the deputy Rustam Bakoyan, there are certain problems with preserving the language in their community. The deputy informed that their community also has a shortage of teachers, there is also the problem of higher education. Rustam Bakoyan emphasized that in Armenia the Yazidis have warm friendly relations with the Armenians, they have lived here for more than 200 years, they have never been persecuted by the Armenian people.
The representative of the Russian community Aleksey Sandikov has informed that in Armenia there is no problem with preserving the language in his community. According to him, the level of the Russian language is quite high in our country, the language is spoken not only by the representatives of their nation, but also by the Armenians. The NA deputy has stated that he also raises the problems of other Russian-speaking national minorities in the National Assembly.
At the meeting, the sides discussed the need to adopt a law on national minorities, to have a separate committee in the National Assembly.
