1 / 4

On March 21, the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan made a statement at the 144th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The main direction of the Assembly agenda is the mobilized fight against the climate changes, which also requires coordinated work of parliaments of different countries.

Alen Simonyan started his statement by thanking the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Indonesia Puan Maharani.

In his speech the NA President touched upon the side effects of the climate change in the international processes. He has informed that Armenia is taking active measures contributing to the international community’s efforts to respond to climate change and anthropogenic disasters.

The Head of the RA Parliament has noted that Armenia has adopted its National Adaptation Plan of Action on Climate Change, which deepens coordination between and across sectoral initiatives. Presenting the peculiarities of the climate problems in Armenia, Alen Simonyan underlined that within the framework of a number of international agreements, the RA Government approved Armenia’s Nationally determined Contributions for a ten-year implementation period (2021-2030), setting the reduction of emissions levels and increase of green zones.

Alen Simonyan has noted that Armenia is promoting policies to increase the share of renewable energy in the power generation sector, adding that relevant legislative reforms are under way.

Taking into consideration the ecological challenges and their irreversible influence on the climate, the RA NA President reiterated the concerted readiness of our state in the given issue to cooperate with all Member States Parliaments and international organizations.

Concluding his speech, the RA NA President has stressed that the parliaments are responsible for ensuring the implementation of conventions and agreements, as well as making reforms in the national legislation, and the RA National Assembly is duly overseeing these processes.
