International Document on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Debated

In 2007, the Republic of Armenia signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Optional Protocol, but on October 22, 2010 ratified only the Convention.

The Optional Protocol is one of the monitoring mechanism of the Convention, and it solves issues sufficiently not being regulated by the Convention. The RA Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Tatevik Stepanyan.

“The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities ensures the monitoring, and its members are independent experts. The Committee discussed the reports being regularly presented by the participant states and works on their bases with the states,” the rapporteur underlined.

According to Deputy Minister, the ratification of the Optional Protocol of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will allow strengthening the cooperation with the UN Committee on Armenia and on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, raising the international authority of the Republic of Armenia in the sphere of human rights.

The issue was debated at the extraordinary sitting of the Standing Committee on Labor and Social Affairs chaired by Heriknaz Tigranyan on November 14 and was endorsed.
