On November 14 the meeting of the Ad-Hoc Inquiry Committee into the events occurred on March 1-2, 2008 in Yerevan and their reasons with a view of submitting its conclusion to the National Assembly was held, during which Deputy Head of the Police Mr. Alexander Afyan, presented clarifications on the activities of the police during the events of March 1-2.
Before it the Chairman of the committee Mr. Samvel Nikoyan announced some details.
It was the second time that the Deputy Head of the Police Mr. Alexander Afyan was in the committee. The first time he clarified on their activities on the morning of March 1 in the Azatutyun Square and its surroundings. This time Mr. Alexander Afyan touched upon the actions that took place near the French embassy and its surroundings, detailing the negotiations with the demonstrators. Mr. Armen Harutyunyan, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, who also participated in the meeting said that the demonstrators were not aggressive but excited and that they were gathered around the territories of French embassy and other embassies for protection. The members of the committee questioned to the Deputy Head of the Police, related to order of applying firearms. Mr. Afyan said that no one gave order to use firearms and the actions were undertaken by the order of Mr. Hayk Harutyunyan, Head of the police of the Republic of Armenia.
