Address of the Speaker of the National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan on the Occasion of the Republic Day

Dear compatriots!

I congratulate you on the occasion of May 28, Republic Day!

The meaning of May 28, 1918 is great. Establishing the first Republic of Armenia and gaining independence in the turmoil of the World War I the Armenian people struggled for life-and-death against the danger of staying in the ruins of the two collapsing empires. Throughout centuries being deprived of statehood the Armenian people self-determined and founded the first Republic of Armenia.

During those days the existence of the Armenian people was in danger, the issue of the nation’s survival was crucial. The enemy entered into the heart of Armenia, Ararat valley. The Armenian people living in deprivation fought against the bandits, who invaded the Motherland. During those days the Armenian people not only self-determined, but they stood for the decision of living independently, struggling in not equal but triumphant battle in Sardarapat, Bash-Aparan and Gharakilisa.

Glory and honour to re-born founding fathers of the Armenian statehood and all martyrs and participants of 1918 May heroic battle!

Today, we have opportunity to speak about the sovereignty of our independent Motherland and support the just cause of Artsakh due to the decision made on May 28, 1918 and heroic battle of those days. The events, which took place 91 years ago today call us on national consent and unity.

Dear compatriots!

I congratulate you once again on the occasion of the holiday of our national dignity. I wish everybody national consent and unity for our Motherland and statehood!
