RA National Assembly President Hovik Abrahamyan Convenes Consultation
1 / 3

On September 3 during the consultation convened by the RA National Assembly President Hovik Abrahamyan, with the participation of the NA Deputy Speakers, the Heads of the NA factions and Standing committees, there held a dicussion on the fact of transfer of Ramil Safarov, who killed the officer Gurgen Margaryan with an axe during the NATO courses in Budapest in 2004 and was sentenced to life imprisonment by the City Court of Hungary, to Azerbaijan by the Hungarian authorities, and pardoning him by the Azerbaijani authorities, the appropriate steps to be taken by the RA NA were also considered. Hovik Abrahamyan proposed to convene NA extraordinary session on September 5 at 12:00. He reminded those present that in the meeting of the National Security Council the RA President Serzh Sargsyan among other steps to be taken had found expedient also the convocation of the NA extraordinary session with relevant agenda. In the NA President’s word, these steps taken by the Hungarian and Azerbaijani authorities contradict the international conventions, they are conditioned by narrow interests and essentially impact the efforts of establishing peace, mutual trust, and the negotiation process in the region. Hovik Abrahamyan finds expedient the adoption of a condemning statement by the RA National Assembly and sending it to the international organizations, parliamentary assemblies, and parliaments of different countries.

The participants of the consultation presented their condemning positions, noting particularly that unified and consistent approach should be shown in relation to the issue. It was decided to create a working group from the representatives of the factions for making NA draft Statement.

Shavarsh Kocharyan, RA Deputy Foreign Minister, was also taking part in the consultation.
