Press Conference of the Armenia-Great Britain Friendship Group

On July 15 Tevan Poghosyan, Head of the Armenia-Great Britain Friendship Group, and the Group members Karine Atshemyan, Ruzanna Muradyan, Lyudmila Sargsyan, Mikayel Melkumyan, Artsvik Minasyan, Levon Dokholyan detailed on the July 6-12 visit to London at the invitation of Alistair Burt, Chair of the British Group of the  Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The delegation members have informed that during the visit MPs from different parliamentary political forces were led by the cooperation principle, and assessed the implemented work as effective.

At the centre of discussions and meetings with British partners were a number of issues concerning Armenia-EU relations, Armenia's decision to join the Eurasian Economic Union, the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Issues related to trade-economic ties between the two countries, sphere of education, Armenology and preservation of the Armenian identity were discussed.    

The Friendship Group members had meetings with British partners, studied the path and principles of British Parliamentarism. As a result of the discussions preliminary arrangements were made to implement certain programmes in a number of spheres.

In the delegation members’ opinion, this visit to Great Britain is distinguished by the precision of discussions at diverse meetings and their fulfillment through various programmes. In particular, Ruzanna Muradyan noted that “Women for Peace” programme is envisaged to be implemented; Tevan Poghosyan informed that an arrangement had been made during the meetings at Oxford University to organize there an exhibition of Armenian manuscripts in autumn for 3 months. Mikayel Melkumyan and Levon Dokholyan highlighted the discussions on trade-economic ties: the Armenian and British partners agreed that there is an unused potential in that area and it is necessary to intensify trade-economic ties. The reworking of British Airways was also among the issues relating to the sphere. Lyudmila Sargsyan highlighted such mutual visits and introduced some principles of British Parliamentarism. Mainly, Karine Atshemyan presented that the NA delegation worked effectively and fulfilled the problems they faced.

The delegation members’ position on need to strengthen Armenian-British multilateral ties and relations was dominating in their speech.

The delegation members answered also journalists’ questions.
