1 / 7

The official visit of the Delegation RA National Assembly President Galust Sahakyan to the Republic of Cyprus continues. The delegation comprises the NA Vice President Eduard Sharmazanov, deputies Vahram Baghdasaryan, Armen Mkhitaryan, Mikayel Manukyan and Lyudmila Sargsyan.

The President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Yiannakis Omirou received the delegation led by the NA President.

During the meeting the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Galust Sahakyan has thanked his counterpart for the invitation and warm reception and has noted that such mutual visits serve as the best evidence of brotherly centuries-old ties, historical and cultural commonalities, spiritual values, the mutual understanding and confidence established between the Armenian and Cypriot peoples. The NA President has underlined that our peoples through centuries have walked side by side, backing each other in difficult times.

Addressing his gratitude to the President of the Cypriot Parliament, the RA NA President has documented that the Cypriot Parliament already in 1975 adopted a resolution on recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

“We are grateful to the friendly people of Cyprus for helping the Armenian emigrants, who survived the genocide perpetrated against the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire and giving them asylum. Today, the representatives of the Cypriot Armenians thanks to the authorities of Cyprus are fully integrated to the Cypriot society, as well as have a considerable role in the public and political life of their second motherland,” Galust Sahakyan noted in his remarks.

He has highly assessed the political dialogue going on between the two countries and in that context he has greatly emphasized the role of the parliamentary diplomacy, noting that the parliamentary relations have reached to qualitatively higher level during recent years. In Galust Sahakyan’s word, Armenia is consistent with continuing the cooperation with the European Union in all formats, in all possible spheres and directions, taking into consideration Armenia’s obligations in all integration processes.

The President of the National Assembly has also talked about the separation of Cyprus by Turkey, noting that Armenia has never accepted and will never accept any attempt of separating the brotherly Cyprus. He has noted that Armenia is for the peaceful settlement of the Cypriot problem through negotiations, accepting as a basis the principles expressed in the UN resolutions, according to which, the settlement of the Cypriot problem should be based on the two-community, two-zone allied structure with one common power and one citizenship.

Galust Sahakyan has also talked about Azerbaijan’s military aggression and the unhealthy policy pursuing by the power of that country.

The President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus expressed his gratitude to the Armenian Delegation for visiting Cyprus and permanently supporting the Cypriots.

Yiannakis Omirou has stated that Cyprus will always support the brotherly Armenia in the international structures, as well as in the European Union will be the friend and supporter of Armenia.

At the end of the meeting the heads of the parliaments of the two countries had a joint press conference.
