On June 8, the Delegation led by the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman that arrived in Armenia on an official visit, was in the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia. The RA NA Speaker Galust Sahakyan met with the members of the Delegation. Representatives of the NA Factions also took part in the meeting.
Welcoming the guests the Speaker of the National Assembly has noted that Armenia especially highlights the stable development of the friendly relations with the Czech Republic, as their country is one of our key partners in Europe.
In Galust Sahakyan’s word, in recent years positive dynamics is noticed in the Armenian-Czech relations, and this visit will be an additional impetus for the further development of bilateral relations.
The Speaker of the Parliament has underlined that our country attaches great importance to the development of the parliamentary diplomacy, and in this context has emphasized the Armenian-Czech active cooperation and mutual visits, as well as the work of the Parliamentary Friendship Groups.
Galust Sahakyan has noted that he is familiar with Miloš Zeman’s interview given to Parlamentni Listy periodical, where he has noted that he wants to call on the Government and the Parliament of the Czech Republic to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide.
“The Armenian Genocide should be recognized and condemned, which is important not only for the Armenian people, but also for the whole mankind, first of all not to allow the repetition of similar crimes. The position of the official Czech Republic is very important for us, and we are grateful to you for your initiative,” Galust Sahakyan said.
Touching upon the regional issues, the Head of the Parliament has underlined that the Armenian side expects the balanced position of the Czech Republic in the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, in consonance with the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the EU general position.
Thanking the RA NA Speaker Galust Sahakyan for the warm reception the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman has documented with satisfaction that the Czech-Armenian relations are at high level. Referring to the process of the implemented Constitutional reforms in Armenia, Miloš Zeman was interested in the way Armenia was going to turn into parliamentary government and expressed hope that those amendments will bring success to Armenia. In this context Galust Sahakyan presented to the guest the processes of corresponding with the legislation after the Constitutional reforms, including the adoption of the new Electoral Code. The RA NA Speaker has also informed that there are still many things to be done, particularly several hundreds of laws shall be passed.
During the meeting issues of bilateral interest were discussed.
At the end of the meeting the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman left a note in the NA Book of Honourable Guests.
