On June 17, the Chairman of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Artak Zakaryan received the Member of the Flemish Parliament (Senate) of Belgium Piet De Bruyn, who after the visit to Armenia will also be in the Nagorno Karabakh Republic. The Head of the ARF Europe Hai Dat(Armenian Cause) Committee Office Gaspar Karapetian also attended the meeting.
Welcoming the guest, Artak Zakaryan highly assessed the Armenian-Belgian relations and the parliamentarians’ role in the development of the bilateral relations. The Committee Chairman has noted that similar visits promote to develop and deepen the friendly relations.
Artak Zakaryan thanked the two Chambers of Belgium for adopting the Statement and the Resolution on Armenian Genocide recognition in 2015.
At the guest’s request Artak Zkaryan talked about the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement process. The Committee Chairman has noted that Armenia sees the settlement of the problem exclusively through peaceful means on the basis of the international principles, laid on the necessity of the exercise of the right to Nagorno Karabakh people’s self-determination. It has been noted that Azerbaijan permanently misinterprets the problem trying to spread disinformation in different institutes of the international community.
Artak Zakaryan also touched upon the RA-European Union relations, Armenia’s membership to the EEC. The Committee Chairman has noted that Armenia will try to have active cooperation with both sides, as well as bridging role between the two economic unions.
Thanking the Committee Chairman for the reception the Belgian MP noted that he was interested in Armenia. He also highlighted the deepening of the relations between the parliaments and the development of cooperation in a number of spheres. The parliamentarian considered important his upcoming visit to Nagorno Karabakh aiming at getting acquainted with the situation on the spot.
