On February 7, the RA NA Speaker Galust Sahakyan received the members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Riksdag of the Kingdom of Sweden being in Armenia on a working visit.

Welcoming the guests, Galust Sahakyan highlighted the expansion of multilateral and mutually beneficial cooperation with Sweden, as well as the activation of comprehensive inter-parliamentary relations. The Head of Parliament stated with satisfaction that the bilateral relations get a new impetus, and the contacts of the Parliamentary Friendship Groups had also been activated during recent period. According to the NA Speaker, there are things to be done for further deepening the cooperation. In this context Galust Sahakyan touched upon the bilateral cooperation at inter-parliamentary platforms. “The close cooperation with the Swedish delegates in the Council of Europe, the OSCE and NATO Parliamentary Assemblies is very important for us,” the NA Speaker said. The Head of Parliament highly assessed the support of Sweden in the democratic processes and reaffirmed Armenia’s willingness to continue and deepen the constructive dialogue. Galust Sahakyan underlined the role of Sweden in the creation and establishment of the Eastern Partnership format.

Talking about the problem of Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the NA Speaker has documented that Armenia sees the regulation of the conflict exclusively through peaceful means and remains faithful to its adopted principle. “The Armenian side highlights the necessity of the implementation of the events aimed at the formation of the atmosphere of mutual trust. Unfortunately, Azerbaijan continuously not only denies the initiatives of the international community, but on the contrary, with its bellicose statements and actions impedes any initiative,” the Head of Parliament noted.

Highly assessing the condemnation of the Armenian Genocide by the Swedish Parliament, Galust Sahakyan has noted that it is one more step for the universal recognition and prevention of such crimes in the world.

Thanking for the reception and warm words, the Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of Parliament of the Kingdom of Sweden Kenneth G. Forslund has stated that the bilateral relations are at high level. Kenneth G. Forslund emphasized the expansion of contacts at international platforms, as well as within the Eastern Partnership framework.

At the guests’ request the NA Speaker Galust Sahakyan presented in detail the goal of the Constitutional amendments implemented in the RA and detailed the phases of the process.
