Press Conference in Parliament
1 / 4

On May 31, the press conference of the RA NA delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly took place. The Head of the Delegation Koryun Nahapetyan and delegation member Edmon Marukyan presented details on the works of NATO PA Spring Session held on May 26-29 in Tbilisi .

According to the speakers’ assessment, the RA NA delegation had an active participation in the NATO PA Spring Session. The delegation members presented their approaches, raised many questions, and got clarifications to them during different discussions. Draft reports and speeches were presented and discussions were held on draft reports in the five Committees of the NATO PA. The Armenian delegation members participated in the sittings of sectoral Committees.

As the Head of the RA NA delegation to the NATO PA stated, the discussions in all the Committees were rather interesting, though Azerbaijani delegation displayed continuous provocative behaviour, speaking about known subjects, to which clear explanations were given: “We have mentioned that it was Azerbaijan to occupy Armenian lands: Shahumyan, Getashen, Martunashen and noted that our aim is not to respond to the provocative actions of the Azerbaijani delegation; we were clearly guided by the agenda established within the framework of various Committees of the NATO PA.”

Koryun Nahapetyan spotlighted the discussions organized at the Wrap-up Plenary Session, during which the Georgian President, Prime Minister and the Speaker of the Parliament delivered speeches. He touched upon the NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller’s report, noting that a question and answer session had been held in that regard and the Armenian delegation had also participated in it.

According to the Head of the RA NA delegation, Rose Gottemoeller highlighted Armenia- NATO partnership and frequent mutual visits.

On the last day, during the Plenary Session, changes were made in the NATO PA Rules of Procedure: as a result, the number of the Turkish delegation members was boosted from 12 to 18.

Regional issues were referred to: Edmon Marukyan mainly mentioned that not withstanding minor clashes with the representatives of Azerbaijani delegation, the main goal of the Armenian delegation was not to give a response: “We participate for the sake of promoting the national and political interests of our country.”

The Head of the RA NA delegation expressed gratitude to the delegation members, Edmon Marukyan, Mikayel Melkumyan and delegation secretary Zabella Ghazaryan: “We have fulfilled quite a good work and I hope that after the final confirmation of the delegation composition we will work harder and represent the RA’s interests with dignity on this important parliamentary platform.”
