Statement

Since the first day of the establishment of the Soviet system a de-Armenization policy has been consistently pursued towards the Armenian-populated territories annexed to Azerbaijan. From the February of 1998 the Soviet, then the authorities of independent Azerbaijan as well unleashed a new bloody phase of this policy, the consequence of which was that Nakhijevan, Artsakh Plateau, Gandzak and other settlements, having preserved monuments of Armenian centuries-old cultural heritage were totally de-Armenized.

The further expansion of the ethnic cleansings accompanied by mass massacres was put an end to only due to the self-defense and liberation struggle of the Armenians of Artsakh. The independence of Nagorno Karabagh was declared by the referendum held on the basis of the right of nations to self-determination.

Today, in the territories, which have remained under the power of Azerbaijan the barbarian destruction of the historical-cultural values, which witness Armenian presence, is going on and gathering new momentum.

On the occasion of the state crime made at the end of the last year, namely the destruction of khachkars (cross-stones) in Old Jugha by the subdivisions of the Azeri army, the authorities of Baku inspired by the restrained response of the world community initiated the implementation of a new vandalistic programme: the destruction of the ancient Christian cemetery.

The efforts on the peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict regularly clash with Azerbaijan’s intolerant position. There is an impression that the latter leading the world community into delude, gains time to carry out programmes against Armenians.

The political forces represented in the National Assembly decisively condemn all kinds of revelations of anti-Armenian hysteria, kindled in Azerbaijan, namely from vindictive statements to the destruction of the Armenian Christian monuments, which are part of the universal cultural heritage.

Highly appreciating the resolution of the European Parliament, which condemns the vandalistic and anti-Armenian revelations, we expect from the international organizations to be more decisive towards such phenomena for the settlement of the regional conflicts and establishment of peace, solidarity and mutual tolerance.
