In Geneva the RA NA Speaker Meets with the Speaker of the Latvian Saeima

On March 18 the 130th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union continued its works, where the RA NA delegation led by the NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan was taking part. The Assembly continued the debates on the theme “The IPU at 125: Renewing Our Commitment to Peace and Democracy.”

Within the framework of the Assembly the RA NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan met with Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Latvian Saeima. During the meeting the interlocutors discussed issues regarding the deepening of the Armenian-Latvian parliamentary relations, the cooperation in the international parliamentary organizations and the development of the European Union-Armenia cooperation. Attesting to the current high level of the Armenian-Latvian cooperation, the sides have stressed that it is necessary to use all opportunities and the existing big potential. Both sides highlighted the further strengthening of the inter-parliamentary relations and the role of the parliamentary diplomacy in the inter-state relations.

Hovik Abrahamyan has recorded with satisfaction that the relations between the two friendly countries are developing and deepening, to which promote the numerous mutual visits at high level. In his word, during the recent period the legal-contractual field has more expanded between Armenia and Latvia, which creates good preconditions between the two countries in different spheres for more active cooperation.

The sides touched upon the regional problems, the international recent developments and highlighted the settlement of all problems and conflicts through peaceful negotiations. Referring to Armenia’s decision of joining the Customs Union, Hovik Abrahamyan has underlined that it does not disturb the further development and deepening of Armenia’s relations with the EU.

The Speaker of the Latvian Saeima also highlighted the development of cooperation of the parliaments of the two countries, highly assessing Hovik Abrahamyan’s official visit to Latvia in terms of the development and rapprochement of the Armenian-Latvian inter-state and inter-parliamentary relations. Mrs Āboltiņa deemed important Armenia’s readiness to develop and strengthen the relations with the European Union, particularly, within the Eastern Partnership framework. “Latvia is ready to support every initiative of Armenia, which will be aimed at the development of cooperation with the European Union,” Solvita Āboltiņa underlined.

In the course of the meeting other issues of bilateral interest were also discussed.
