On May 7, the RA NA President Alen Simonyan met with the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ivana Živković.
The meeting was held in the National Assembly ahead of the launch of the UNDP Parliamentary Development 2nd Programme.
Alen Simonyan thanked the Government of Sweden for the continuous efforts in establishing parliamentary democracy and the support shown during the First Programme of the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom, welcomed the beginning cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Norway.
“We have adopted policy of implementing institutional reforms, and on this path the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia adopted and welcomed the activity of the UNDP Modern Parliament for a Modern Armenia project. The positive results of the Project in the work of the National Assembly and in the relationship between the citizens and the civil society are tangible,” the NA President underscored.
“It is a great honour for me to be here. The cooperation between the Republic of Armenia and the UN in implementing different institutional reforms is remarkable for us. I would like to especially underline that we highly appreciate the work of the Government of Armenia in the solution of the humanitarian problems of the displaced persons from Nagorno Karabakh,” Ivana Živković noted.
Touching upon the Modern Parliament for a Modern Armenia project, the Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS countries stated with satisfaction about the successful implementation of the First Programme, thanking the Head of Parliament for the unreserved support of the implementation of the Programme.
The interlocutors discussed the security situation, the settlement process of the Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, highlighting the role of the Crossroads of Peace project in the establishment of lasting peace in the region, as well as in fostering trade-economic relations between the countries of the region.
