The Government authored the draft law on Ratifying the Additional Protocol to the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism.
It was discussed and endorsed at February 23 regular sitting of the NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security.
According to the RA Deputy Director of the National Security Service Samvel Hayrapetyan, the protocol was signed on 22 October 2015, in Riga by 18 states. The Republic of Armenia signed the document on January 24, 2018.
The purpose of the protocol is to make addenda to the above-mentioned convention, which provides for the criminalization of acts under the articles of the protocol on going abroad for terrorism, its financing and organization or supporting it in other ways.
“By ratifying the protocol, Armenia will complete the process of joining the documents of the Council of Europe on the prevention of terrorism and the fight against it,” Samvel Hayrapetyan noted. According to him, the implementation of the document will contribute to the prevention of all forms of terrorism, its negative impact on human rights, in particular, the right to life. It will consolidate the efforts of the States Parties to the Convention in the field of fight against terrorism and deepen their effective cooperation.
