On February 9, the Chair of the NA Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs Taguhi Tovmasyan met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Syrian Arab Republic to the Republic of Armenia Nora Arissian and the Consul, Third Secretary Ahmad Hassan Alathba.
Taguhi Tovmasyan expressed her deep condolences to her colleagues on the irreversible consequences of the catastrophic earthquakes in Syria. “As a consequence of the accidents in Syria, serious humanitarian problems have arisen: there are more than 1.000 victims, hundreds of people injured, citizens with unknown fates and homeless. Educational institutions, kindergartens don’t work, there is no electricity, and there is a lack of ambulances and medical equipment,” the Ambassador noted.
The Committee Chair inquired about the fates of our compatriots in Syria. According to the preliminary data, unfortunately, we already have 2 victims, and the Syrian Armenians left homeless live in Armenian churches and Union halls.
The Ambassador expressed gratitude to the Republic of Armenia for the friendly attitude shown to the people of Syria at such difficult times.
Taguhi Tovmasyan expressed her willingness to her colleagues to use all possible levers to support Syria in such a difficult humanitarian situation.
The Ambassador informed that a mourning book has been opened at the Syrian Embassy to the Republic of Armenia, and fundraising to help citizens in serious condition is underway.
“The financial support to the friendly people of Syria by all of us will contribute to improving the humanitarian situation,” Taguhi Tovmasyan said.
