On November 6 a working meeting was organized in the NA Standing Committee on Human Rights and Public Affairs to debate the draft law “On Providing Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Women and Men” submitted by the Government.
The RA Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Filaret Berikyan has noted that the definition “gender” has been given, having as a basis the model law of the CIS participant states, which was adopted at the 26th Inter-Parliamentary sitting in 2005. Mr Berikyan has noted that the law adopted on May 20, 2013 does not contradict the RA Constitution and other legal acts stemming from it, particularly the RA Family Code and the law “On RA Education.”
During the debates the NA deputies, the representatives of the Government and those responsible for the sphere touched upon the disputable items of the bill.
At the end of the meeting the member of the Committee Alexander Arzoumanian noted that the Committee was ready to propose certain amendments in the definitions “gender.” Those responsible expressed their opinion against the law, promised to make recommendations in written form and submit observations to the Committee and the Government.
