Joint Statement of the Chair of Armenia-Romania Friendship Group of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia and the President of the Friendship Parliamentary Group with Armenia of the Parliament of Romania on the Occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between the Two Countries
1 / 1

On December 17, 2021 we mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Armenia and Romania.

Armenian-Romanian friendship was deeply rooted in history, and it was not by accident that Romania was one of the first states to recognize the independence of Armenia and establish diplomatic relations with it on December 17, 1991. Moreover, the cooperation on the parliamentary level between our states, had begun even earlier, when the observers from the Romanian parliament were present at the Armenian independence referendum on September 21, 1991.

Since the very beginning one of the important spheres of our cooperation has been the parliamentary dimension. Throughout the three decades the Armenia-Romania inter-parliamentary friendship groups have deepened and expanded bilateral cooperation, creating a strong partnership and close cooperation in many areas, such as cooperation in international parliamentary organizations, culture, education, science, sports, and many others.

Romanian Parliament was one of the first parliaments of the EU member countries that began and shortly, in 2018, finalized the process of ratification of the European Union-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement. Cooperation in the various European platforms is one of the main elements of the Armenian-Romanian parliamentary partnership.

We reiterate the importance of periodical hearings with regard to the Armenian Genocide as held on April 27, 2021 at the plenary session of the two chambers of the Romanian Parliament and highly value the announcements made by Romanian parliamentarians on necessity for recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide by the Romanian Parliament.

We continue to support the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict within the format of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmanship and we stand by our commitments to follow the resolutions and positions of the respectful European structures in this regard, as we remain committed to contribute to the strengthening of comprehensive international order, to international cooperation based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, promoting sustainable development and protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms in the wider European area.

We are committed to a constructive and inclusive dialogue, and we will continue to work towards strengthening the inter-parliamentary interactions with Romania-Armenia Friendship Group, yielding tangible benefits at both bilateral and international level.

We bilaterally reiterate our readiness to make every effort to contribute to overcoming the current global challenges such as climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, issues of international peace, security, and sustainable development.
