Galust Sahakyan Discusses the Development of Bilateral Relations with the Head of the Senate of Canada
1 / 3

The RA NA Speaker Galust Sahakyan in Geneva within the framework of the 133rd Inter-Parliamentary Assembly met with Leo Housakos, Speaker of the Senate of Canada. In the course of the meeting issues regarding the development of the inter-parliamentary cooperation were discussed.

Galust Sahakyan has thanked the Speaker of the Senate of Canada for the meeting and has documented that Armenia pays great importance to the development and deepening of the friendly relations with Canada in bilateral and multilateral formats. The Head of the RA Parliament highly assessed Leo Housakos’s readiness of strengthening the relations between the parliaments of the two countries and boosting the cooperation.

The RA NA President particularly noted: “The cooperation of our parliaments within the framework of the international organizations is of permanent and constructive character. We are grateful to the Canadian side for consistently supporting the rise of the status of Armenia in La Francophonie International Organization.”

Talking about the Armenian-Canadian friendly relations, Galust Sahakyan expressed conviction that the sincere attitude of Canada towards the Armenian people was also displayed in 2002, when a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide was adopted by the Senate of Canada, which was reaffirmed in May of this year. The NA Speaker has stated that it once more proves the position of Canada, according to which, such crimes perpetrated against mankind, should be condemned and prevented.

“We also highly assess the balanced and neutral position of Canada on the Nagorno Karabakh problem,” Galust Sahakyan concluded his speech.

Thanking for the meeting, the Speaker of the Senate of Canada Leo Housakos has noted that the two countries closely cooperate.

“Canada is blessed that the Armenians are also part of its society. We are proud of them,” the Speaker of the Senate.

Leo Housakos assured that the Armenian-Canadian cooperation would continue and more strengthen. At the request of the Head of the Senate of Canada, the RA NA Speaker touched upon the recent developments over the Nagorno Karabakh problem and gave exhaustive answers on the Azerbaijani aggression and the Armenian counteraction.

The sides also talked about the constitutional reforms being expected in the Republic of Armenia.

At the end of the meeting the Speaker of the Senate accepted Galust Sahakyan’s invitation and informed that next year he will pay an official visit to Armenia.
